POSITIVE BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT FOR PARENTS
This five-evening course presents proven, practical and positive methods for dealing with common behavior problems exhibited by children and adolescents with autism and related disorders. Each week different methods for treating problem behaviors are presented, allowing participants to practice at home and get feedback the following week. It’s like having a personal consultant at a fraction of the cost! This is one of our most popular courses and classes and fills up quickly. Seating is very limited to ensure participant success.  As a result of taking this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and avoid coercive parenting procedures that  actually produce more undesired behavior and poor interpersonal relationships!
  • Reduce undesired behavior using non-punitive and non-coercive methods!
  • Increase desired behavior!
  • Ensure your child wants to behave well now and in the future!

WRITING IEP GOALS & OBJECTIVES
TO ENSURE STUDENT SUCCESS
The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is the document that guides a child's education. As such, it is the most critical element in determining whether or not a child receives a quality education. When developed and implemented properly, the IEP is the student's and parent's single best educational resource. Unfortunately, many IEPs are improperly developed and/or implemented. This prevents the child from receiving an appropriate education. In this workshop, participants will learn to:
  • Identify common IEP errors and how to correct them
  • Identify effective & ineffective goals/objectives
  • Write effective goals/objectives that guarantee student progress
  • Correct existing goals/objectives that are limiting student progress
Participants will have the opportunity to write their own objectives and receive expert feedback about them.

USING VISUAL SUPPORTS TO TEACH INDEPENDENCE
Many children with autism have difficulty learning and working independently. Visual schedules are used widely to support children with autism who have such difficulties. However, they are often used in such a way that reduces their potential effectiveness. This workshop  addresses the essential elements of an effective visual schedule designed to foster independence in children with autism and related disorders. Participants will learn how to:
  • Determine if a child will benefit from a visual schedule
  • Determine if a child is ready for a visual schedule
  • Prepare a child who is not ready
  • Develop a schedule
  • Teach the child to use the schedule
  • Determine if the schedule is working as desired
Each participant will have the opportunity to prepare his or her own visual schedule during the workshop.

ASSESSING AND TREATING SENSORY DISORDERS
IN INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM
Many children with autism and related disorders display unusual responses to environmental stimuli. They may overreact or underreact to visual, tactile or aural input. These responses range from very mild and barely noticeable to those that interfere with learning, socialization, play and other important daily activities. In addition, some behavior problems are maintained by their sensory consequences.
Fortunately, there are effective treatments for these problems. However, in order to select the most effective treatment for a given problem, a thorough assessment must be conducted and used to guide treatment selections. In this workshop, participants will learn to:
  • Determine if a particular problem is the result of sensory influences
  • Determine if the problem is the result of some other environmental determinant
  • Select an appropriate treatment based on the results of the assessment
